Why Thickness Matters
The thickness of your rubber flooring directly impacts its performance, safety, and longevity. Too thin, and you won't get adequate protection. Too thick, and you're spending money unnecessarily. Let's break down the ideal thickness for different applications.
Gym Flooring Thickness Guide
For gym environments, thickness depends on the intensity of use:
- 8-10mm: Cardio areas, yoga studios, stretching zones
- 15-20mm: Home gyms, general weight training
- 25-30mm: Commercial gyms, CrossFit boxes
- 30-40mm: Olympic lifting platforms, heavy dropping zones
Playground Safety Standards
Australian Standard AS 4422 determines playground thickness based on Critical Fall Height (CFH):
- 25mm: Equipment up to 1.0m high
- 40mm: Equipment up to 1.5m high
- 50mm: Equipment up to 2.0m high
- 65mm+: Equipment up to 2.5m or higher
Pool Areas
For pool surrounds, 15-25mm is typically ideal, providing:
- Adequate slip resistance
- Comfortable cushioning
- Good drainage characteristics
